What is Family Mediation?

Family Mediation is a voluntary and co-operative process where a trained family mediator helps separating or divorcing couples to resolve a variety of issues related to the break-up of their relationship.

During mediation, couples develop a plan and reach an agreement that they believe is fair, workable and meets their needs and the needs of their children. Couples discuss things like:

  • How and when to separate
  • Parenting plans and principles (including custody and access)
  • Child support
  • Spousal support
  • Division of property
  • Other important issues regarding separation and divorce

Couples may choose to resolve all issues or only some issues through the mediation process.
